Jellyfish alert

Jellyfish alert

BERJAYA Langkawi Resort has erected signages along its beachfront to warn and advise swimmers about the presence of jellyfish in the waters.

The resort’s general manager Graeme L. Dwyer who hails from Australia is putting to good use his experience in tackling the jellyfish danger.

He said the public had to be warned of the dangers of jellyfish and the signages provided information on the do’s and dont’s when one is stung.

Dwyer also said first aid in the form of applying or pouring vinegar on the area where one has been stung would be provided at three first aid stations set up along the 180m stretch of the beach.

He was speaking at a press briefing at the resort recently.

“The whole swimming area will be skimmed to remove any jellyfish and at a later stage, a protective beach net will be spread to safeguard the whole area.

“The jellyfish situation in Langkawi is manageable as far as the deadly box jellyfish species is concerned,” he said.

“The presence of jellyfish increases from December to March and we have to be prepared,’’ he said.

Floods hit more areas in Kedah

Floods hit more areas in Kedah

Several new areas in Kedah have been hit by floods, including Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak’s home at Jalan Sultanah here.

Azizan, who lives in the house with his wife Tok Puah Faekah Sheikh Hamzah and son Mohamad Azizan, 28, moved out from the house at about 11am yesterday after it was submerged in one metre of water.

Also flooded was the compound of the state police contingent at Jalan Stadium.

The number of evacuees in the state has increased to 40,212 as Taman Uda, Lorong Bayu, Taman PKNK and Taman Rakyat in Kota Setar were also hit by floods.

Azizan, when met after chairing a meeting with federal and state government agencies, said 140 relief centres had been opened in Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Padang Terap.

A National Security Council operations room spokesman said 100 evacuation centres were still open.

Meanwhile, the Langkawi Recreation Club and nine other non-governmental organisations have launched a flood relief fund for the state.

Club president Datuk Mansor Ismail said they hoped to collect as much as possible during the one-month fund-raising period until Dec 5, to be channelled to the flood victims.

In Kangar, the floods eased slightly yesterday morning, with 1,375 of 15,159 evacuees allowed to return home and 11 of the 55 evacuation centres closed.

But state Drainage and Irrigation Department director Nishad Mohamed Shaffy has warned about the possibility of a second wave of flooding.

He said if there was heavy rainfall in the next few days, the department might be forced to re-open the six floodgates at the Timah Tasoh dam.

The water level in Kangar had subsided significantly but several roads were still impassable to light vehicles.

Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Pendang recorded a higher number of people forced to leave their homes although the situation in Padang Terap has improved.

Kubang Pasu had the highest number of evacuees at 15,637, followed by Padang Terap (3,219), Kota Setar (1,788), Pokok Sena (1,259) and Pendang (158), among other areas.

A spokesman at the operations centre here said 104 relief shelters were opened, including 46 in Kubang Pasu and 35 in Padang Terap.

However, 774 people in the Padang Terap area have been allowed to go home after the situation improved.

The flood in Kota Setar has worsened and the water level rose although the rain had stopped.

Over in Kangar, the number of flood victims has hit 13,723. An operations room spokesman said the number of evacuees had increased from the 11,000 as of Wednesday night.

Most of those evacuated are from the state capital while the situation in the northern part of the state is improving.

Kangar still under water

Kangar still under water

Almost the entire town remains submerged with the number of evacuees continuing to rise.

Despite the rainfall having eased since Tuesday, the situation is still unmanageable with 90% of the state capital inundated.

A spokesman with the Perlis National Security Council said the state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) had no choice but to open up the six flood gates at the Timah Tasoh dam to release water and prevent its walls from collapsing.

He said there were now over 8,000 evacuees at 42 relief centres throughout the state. There were 26 such centres in Kangar, nine in Arau and seven in Padang Besar.

A total of 1,909 families had already sought refuge at these centres.

The official said all roads leading to Kangar and main roads in the state had been closed as a precautionary and safety measure.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu said the situation in Padang Besar had improved, but not in Kangar and Arau.

State DID director Nishad Mohamed Shaffy said the water level at the dam had dropped from 30.49m to 30m but was still above the danger level of 29.6m.

“It is drizzling in Padang Besar and Wang Kelian, but if it starts to rain moderately then the water level at the dam will rise again,” he said.

At the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Arau, some 8,000 students are expected to be in for more hardship if the floods do not ease.

The university management had to ration the current food supply to ensure there was enough stock to last for the next two days.

Over 700 teacher trainees at the Perlis Teachers’ Training College were stranded in their quarters’ as the water level rose to chest level.

Inundated Alor Setar airport remains closed

Inundated Alor Setar airport remains closed

The Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Alor Setar remains closed because the runways are flooded, and for now, only helicopter services are available in Kedah.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said all flights were cancelled from yesterday as the airport was in 20cm of water.

“The airport will remain closed until further notice,’’ said Kong at a press conference after sending off United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at Subang Airport here yesterday.

Kong said that only helicopter services were available in Kedah.

He also said that there were no plans to re-route the Alor Setar-bound flights to Langkawi and Penang for now.

“However, those affected, can opt to take flights from or to the nearest airports.

MAS managing director Datuk Tengku Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz said affected passengers had the option to reschedule flights or make arrangements to fly from either Penang or Langkawi.

“They can also opt for ground or sea transportation,’’ he said.

On the affected pilgrims scheduled to perform the haj in Mecca, Azmil said they would make arrangements with Tabung Haji to reschedule the flights.

Alor Setar Nasi Lemak

Zam Zam Nasi Lemak

937A Lorong Merpati, off Jalan Langgar (near St Michael’s school).
Open 7am to 2pm, 6pm to 11pm. Days off not fixed.

A NASI lemak powerhouse, this family business has been around for over four decades; there are now five Zam Zam outlets in Alor Setar.

The secret to this nasi lemak’s oomph lies in the combination of four types of gravy: kurma, a gravy from beef cooked with spices and dark soy sauce, a hot gravy, and a sweet-and-spicy one which are all served with the rice.

The result is a burst of spicy, hot and sweet flavours – a potent combination.

About 15 dishes are available daily, such as fried chicken, ayam masak merah, chicken kurma, fish curry and blanched ladies fingers.

Zam Zam Hanifa Nasi Lemak

Restoran Selera, 64T Jalan Teluk Wan Jah (opposite Menara Zakat).
Open daily 6.30am to 2pm.

THE rice served here is very aromatic – it has lots of spices and is coloured yellow with turmeric. Top your nasi lemak with a slice of beef cooked in dark soy sauce and fried honey chicken or choose from over a dozen other dishes.

Dhal curry and beef gravy are then spooned on top of the rice and dishes. An average of 16 dishes such as squid in sambal, fish head curry, fried liver and kurma chicken are served here daily.

Mental battle up north

Mental battle up north

ABOUT 120 teams from 45 schools will vie for honours in the Kedah leg of the RHB-The Star mighty minds challenge at the Alor Setar Mall on July 30.

The big showdown will see the northern state’s brightest sparks battling it out to represent Kedah in the national finals in Kuala Lumpur in October.

The competition is open to all secondary schools and each team consists of three participants.

Registration for the Kedah level challenge, jointly organised by RHB Banking Group and The Star, will close on July 22.

A group of students and teachers from SMK Sultanah Asma in Jalan Langgar, Alor Setar, handed over their registration forms to The Star’s senior marketing representative in Kedah Yong Chuan Seng yesterday.

SMK Sultanah Asma senior assistant Fauziah Ramli said the school would be represented by a new batch of students this year as last year’s representatives were no longer around.

“The competition will test the students’ Intelligence quotient (IQ) and the teachers who have been tasked to select the cream of the crop have a big task to select the brightest ones,” she said.

She added that most of the students had taken part in theory competitions involving chemistry, physics and biology at national level but not a hands-on activity.

Four teachers — Hasnida Daud (biology), Zatul Iffah Taib (physics), Rahmah Ramli (English) and Rohana Said (chemistry) — have been assigned to screen the best students for the competition.

Rahmah said the teachers were prepared for the competition as they knew what to expect based on last year’s experience

“We aim to be among the top three finishers,” she added.

Ancient sites unearthed

Ancient sites unearthed

BUJANG Valley in Merbok, Kedah, is twice bigger than what was originally thought, according to new findings by a team of researchers from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

Team leader Assoc Prof Dr Mokhtar Saidin said following the discovery of ancient furnaces for iron smelting two weeks ago in Jeniang, the size was now estimated to be 35km in radius compared to 15km in radius before.

“This mean the Bujang Valley civilisation area encompasses about 1,000sq km compared to 400sq km before,” he told a press conference in Penang yesterday.

He said the southern area of the civilisation still stretched from Merbok to Bukit Mertajam but the eastern side, previously believed to end at the North-South Highway, now stretched till Jeniang.

Mokhtar said a team of eight researchers from the Centre for Global Archaeological Research found the furnaces in Jeniang, which is about 30km from Bujang Valley.

He said the team, which conducted excavations from February 2009 to May this year, found complexes such as ritual sites and industries of early civilisation in Bujang Valley which was based on the iron industry.

“We excavated 10 sites along Sungai Batu in Bujang Valley and found evidences that furnaces were used by the ancient civilisation,” he said.

Based on dating samples of iron smelting sites, he said an early civilisation which was probably based on animism existed there between the first and fifth century.

But from the fifth century to the 14th century, the area was a thriving Hindu and Buddhist civilisation, he added.

It had been reported that archaeologists had unearthed temple ruins and artefacts dating back to more than 1,500 years there.

In a related matter, Mokhtar said an international conference on ‘Bujang Valley and Early Civilisations’ in South-East Asia would be held at Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur from Monday to Wednesday.

It is organised by the centre and the Department of National Heritage of Malaysia.

He said 28 academic papers would be presented by archaeologists from South-East Asian countries as well as from China, India, United States and Britain.

Understanding Langkawi

The name "Langkawi" has two possible origins. First, it is believed to be related to the kingdom of Langkasuka, itself a version of the Malay negari alang-kah suka ("the land of all one's wishes"), centered in modern-day Kedah. The historical record is sparse, but a Chinese Liang Dynasty record (c. 500 AD) refers to the kingdom of "Langgasu" as being founded in the 1st century AD. Second, it could be a combination of the Malay words 'helang', meaning "eagle" and 'kawi', meaning "reddish-brown" or "strong", in old Malay.

Langkawi eventually came under the influence of the Sultanate of Kedah, but Kedah was conquered in 1821 by Siam and Langkawi along with it. The Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 transferred power to the British, which held the state until independence, except for a brief period of Thai rule under the Japanese occupation of Malaya during World War II. Thai influences remain visible in the culture and food of Langkawi.

Langkawi remained a sleepy backwater until 1987, when the island was granted tax-free status with the intention of promoting tourism and improve the lives of the islanders. The following boom was spectacular and now Langkawi figures on most every European travel agency's radar.

This spectacular boom was also due to the fact that Mahsuri's curse was lifted with the birth of her 7th generation descendant.

Sheltered by the mountainous backbone of Peninsular Malaysia, Langkawi escapes the northeastern winter monsoon entirely and enjoys sunny skies in winter when the eastern provinces are flooded. Coupled with natural white sand beaches, lush jungle foliage and craggy mountain peaks - but hampered by inaccessibility - the island was at one time touted as "Malaysia's best-kept secret".

The 10,000 hectares of Langkawi and its 99 islands were declared a Geopark by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2007.

Langkawi

Langkawi,(Jawi:لانكاوي ) officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah (Malay: Langkawi Permata Kedah) is an archipelago of 99 islands (an extra 5 temporary islands are revealed at low tide) in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. On July 15, 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permata Kedah in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee Celebration. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi with a population of some 64,792, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba. Langkawi is also an administrative district with the town of Kuah as the capital and largest town. Langkawi is a duty-free island.

History of Perlis

Perlis was originally part of Kedah, although it occasionally came under rule by Siam or Aceh. After the Siamese conquered Kedah in 1821, the British felt their interests in Perak to be threatened. This resulted in the 1826 Burney and Low Treaties formalising relations between the two Malay states and Siam, their nominal overlord. In the Burney Treaty, the exiled Kedah sultan Ahmad Tajuddin was not restored to his throne. Sultan Ahmad and his armed supporters then fought unsuccessfully for his restoration over twelve years (1830-1842).

In 1842, the Sultan finally agreed to accept Siamese terms, and was restored to his throne of Kedah. However, Siam separated Perlis into a separate principality directly vassal to Bangkok. Syed Hussain Jamalulail, the paternal grandson of a Hadhrami Arab immigrant and maternal grandson of the Sultan of Kedah, became the first Raja of Perlis. His descendants still rule Perlis, but as rajas, instead of as sultans.

As with Kedah, the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 forced Siam to relinquish its southern Malay vassal states to Great Britain. The British installed a Resident in the Perlis Royal capital of Arau. Perlis was returned to Siam by the Japanese in World War II as a reward for Siam's alliance with Japan, but this brief annexation ended with the Japanese surrender. After World War II, Perlis returned to British rule until it became part of the Malayan Union, then Federation of Malaya in 1957 and lastly Federation of Malaysia in 1963.

Since 2000, the Raja or hereditary monarch has been Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin. He was the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 2001 to 2006. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra was the Regent of Perlis during the five-year period when Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin was Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The Chief Executive or Menteri Besar is Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu of Barisan Nasional.

* 华玲(Baling)
* 万拉峇鲁(Bandar Baharu)
* 哥打士打(Kota Setar)
* 瓜拉姆达(Kuala Muda)
* 古邦巴素(Kubang Pasu)
* 居林(Kulim)
* 浮罗交怡(Langkawi)
* 巴东得腊(Padang Terap)
* 笨筒(Pendang)
* 锡(Sik)
* 铅(Yan)
