Litterbugs beware

THE Alor Setar City Council is roping in volunteers to help catch litterbugs.

Mayor Datuk Khazali Din said the volunteers would be from the Rotary Club, Village Heads Council and Federal Village Development and Security Committees.

He said they would be made members of an Anti-Garbage Vo- luntary Squad which the council would set up to catch litterbugs.

He said these volunteers would jot down information on the litterbugs and report them to the council for action to be taken against the culprits.

“For example, if they see someone throwing garbage out of a car, they can jot down the car registration number and hand it over to the council,” Khazali said, adding that the move was part of the council’s efforts to promote cleanliness in the city.

He, however, did not say when the squad would be formed.

On another matter, Khazali said the council’s quit rent collection had increased following the introduction of online payment system through seven banks this year.

He said the council collected RM15.3mil in the first two months of the year compared to between RM10mil and RM12mil for the same period annually since 2000.

He said the collection this year included RM2.2mil in quit rent arrears.

Khazali said the council’s mo-bile counters at wet markets had also helped in making it easier for ratepayers to pay their dues.

He said the wet markets where the mobile counters were set up included Pasar Peremba, Pasar Kampung Berjaya, Pasar Simpang Kuala and Market Koboi.
