Perlis govt looking at ways to save Putra Palace

Perlis govt looking at ways to save Putra Palace

THE Perlis government is studying several options to sustain Putra Palace Hotel, a subsidiary of the State Economic Development Corporation, including privatising it.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man said to date, a number of parties have shown keen interest in taking over the hotel management.

However, Azlan stressed that the government had yet to decide on the privatisation move and would consider other options to further develop the hotel and make it profitable again, after suffering losses for the past years.

“The state government has limited expertise and capability in running businesses such as the hospitality sector.

“We need more professionals and experts in the related field to manage the hotel and bring it back to black,” he said at a press conference recently.

Citing an example, he said the decision to privatise the state government-owned Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Islam Perlis (IPTIPs) had yielded positive results although there were sceptics in the early stage.

Having said so, Azlan pointed out that it was important for the state administration to evaluate the options wisely.

“We want to make sure there is balance participation and close cooperation between both the government and private sector.

“As I said previously, the private sector played an equally important role in the state economic development,” he said.

The second series of the 2013 Audit Report revealed that Putra Palace Hotel’s pre-tax losses had risen by 205.3 per cent from RM530,000 in 2011 to RM1.16 million in 2012.

Floods hit more areas in Kedah

Floods hit more areas in Kedah

Several new areas in Kedah have been hit by floods, including Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak’s home at Jalan Sultanah here.

Azizan, who lives in the house with his wife Tok Puah Faekah Sheikh Hamzah and son Mohamad Azizan, 28, moved out from the house at about 11am yesterday after it was submerged in one metre of water.

Also flooded was the compound of the state police contingent at Jalan Stadium.

The number of evacuees in the state has increased to 40,212 as Taman Uda, Lorong Bayu, Taman PKNK and Taman Rakyat in Kota Setar were also hit by floods.

Azizan, when met after chairing a meeting with federal and state government agencies, said 140 relief centres had been opened in Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Padang Terap.

A National Security Council operations room spokesman said 100 evacuation centres were still open.

Meanwhile, the Langkawi Recreation Club and nine other non-governmental organisations have launched a flood relief fund for the state.

Club president Datuk Mansor Ismail said they hoped to collect as much as possible during the one-month fund-raising period until Dec 5, to be channelled to the flood victims.

In Kangar, the floods eased slightly yesterday morning, with 1,375 of 15,159 evacuees allowed to return home and 11 of the 55 evacuation centres closed.

But state Drainage and Irrigation Department director Nishad Mohamed Shaffy has warned about the possibility of a second wave of flooding.

He said if there was heavy rainfall in the next few days, the department might be forced to re-open the six floodgates at the Timah Tasoh dam.

The water level in Kangar had subsided significantly but several roads were still impassable to light vehicles.

Kangar still under water

Kangar still under water

Almost the entire town remains submerged with the number of evacuees continuing to rise.

Despite the rainfall having eased since Tuesday, the situation is still unmanageable with 90% of the state capital inundated.

A spokesman with the Perlis National Security Council said the state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) had no choice but to open up the six flood gates at the Timah Tasoh dam to release water and prevent its walls from collapsing.

He said there were now over 8,000 evacuees at 42 relief centres throughout the state. There were 26 such centres in Kangar, nine in Arau and seven in Padang Besar.

A total of 1,909 families had already sought refuge at these centres.

The official said all roads leading to Kangar and main roads in the state had been closed as a precautionary and safety measure.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu said the situation in Padang Besar had improved, but not in Kangar and Arau.

State DID director Nishad Mohamed Shaffy said the water level at the dam had dropped from 30.49m to 30m but was still above the danger level of 29.6m.

“It is drizzling in Padang Besar and Wang Kelian, but if it starts to rain moderately then the water level at the dam will rise again,” he said.

At the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Arau, some 8,000 students are expected to be in for more hardship if the floods do not ease.

The university management had to ration the current food supply to ensure there was enough stock to last for the next two days.

Over 700 teacher trainees at the Perlis Teachers’ Training College were stranded in their quarters’ as the water level rose to chest level.
